Happy Singles' Awareness Day

I could write a cute little intro to joke about my perpetual singledom on this day of love, but I'm too tired/bored/boring/over it, and I'm just killing time on a redeye Greyhound. Here's some anti-Valentine's day anthems.

Kacey Musgraves - Merry Go 'Round
99 times of 100 I don't like contemporary country. This is one of those gems I can't get enough of.

Death Cab For Cutie - Your New Twin Sized Bed

John Newman - Cheating

Feeling like something more lovey-dovey? Here's a couple alternatives.

Tegan and Sara - Don't Find Another Love
This came out last week. It's kinda cute. Whatever.

NONONO - Pumpin' Blood
This has been on repeat for the past half hour. I'm in love - it's too damn catchy.

Happy Valentine's Day, and good luck on any remaining midterms/assignments! :)

January Twenty Fourteen

The new year has come and gone, and it's mid-January. Which means that I'm back to listening to tropical summertime music, and wishing that I was literally anywhere warmer than here. One-way ticket to Death Valley, Nevada? Don't mind if I do.
Here's a recap of my favourites from this month, and some old favourites from 2013.

Youth Lagoon - Afternoon
This was hands down my favourite song of 2013. I still can't get enough of it.

Stars - Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It
Another favourite from 2013.

Boy - Little Numbers
I honestly can't remember if I've mentioned this song on my blog before, but I was absolutely loved this song last January. It's still pretty catchy.

Kalle Mattson - Waterfalls
This Ottawa-based band has got one of the best music videos I've ever seen. The camera effects are so well done, and San Francisco is such a beautiful city. It's a great song for a study break.

Tegan and Sara - Guilty As Charged
Tegan and Sara came back, aiiiiieee! They're new album is very poppy, but I think they pulled it off regardless. Closer was their catchy single, and it's been used for many a workout this year, but Guilty As Charged was my favourite off of Heartthrob.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

John Newman - Losing Sleep

Other favourites from 2013 include Kids by Mikky Ekko, Two-Way Street by Kimbra, Royals by Lorde, The Mother We Share by CHVRCHES, Papaoutai by Stromae, and Something Good by Alt-J

2014
Wild Cub - Thunder Clatter
This bright and cheerful song is by a band that just released their first full-length album, Youth. I'm excited to see how the band will do.

Songs for Studying

It's that time of the year again: midterms! I love listening to music while I study or relax, so I've put together a small selection of mostly instrumental and easy-listening songs from my own studying playlist. Enjoy :)

David Palmer, Roger Neill, Brian Reitzell - Beginners Theme Suite

Lord Huron - We Went Wild
We Went Wild has a great low-key rhythm, especially compared to their other more catchy and upbeat songs. Perfect for relaxing.

Patrick Watson - Big Bird in a Small Cage

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Perpetuum Mobile
Quite a beautiful piece, with a wonderful rhythm throughout.

The Radio Dept. - I Don't Like It Like This

Michael Aranda - Fifty One Degrees

Songs for Fall

Soooooo, someone *coughelizabethcough* asked me for some song recommendations, and so I've come out of my (rather long and unannounced) blog hiatus to put together a playlist of songs for autumn. Enjoy!

A Fine Frenzy - Now Is The Start
I absolutely adore A Fine Frenzy. As if it's not already awesome enough that her music sounds like sunshine and smiles, her pseudonym also comes from a line in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which makes the lit nerd in me smile :)

A Fine Frenzy - Bird of the Summer
Another one of hers - I also recommend Coming Around, Lifesize, Electric Twist, Come on Come out, Blow Away, and What Wouldn't I Do. She's got so many lovely songs!

Alexi Murdoch - Blue Mind
I also recommend All of My Days.

Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out
I'm pretty sure you will have heard this on the radio at some point; it's one of my favourites from Florence. Also recommended: Bedroom Hymns, What the Water Gave Me, Only if for A Night, and The Dog Days Are Over

Gabrielle Aplin - Home

Broken Bells - October

The Middle East - Blood

Good luck studying, and let me know if you've got any playlist requests; I had fun putting this one together! :)

Unwanted Books

So I enjoy making occasional trips to Value Village to browse through their used book section, and usually I can find a good deal or two. They've got plenty of books, and they're always at great prices. However, I've started to notice that there are certain books that show up on their shelves much more often than others. In honour of these unwanted books, I've decided to compile a list of books that no one wants to keep.

Floréal

Finally, it's SPRING!  After months of subzero temperatures, I'm so ready to get out of my heavy winter coats and do some hiking, biking, swimming, and sailing! I've been very busy with school and other events for the past month, but I don't actually have much to report for my blog. Instead, I thought I'd make a quick spring-inspired music post - hopefully it can brighten up your week :)

Yesterday, French Films released their second full-length album, White Orchid. Here's my favourite track (so far) from the album.
Where We Come From - French Films (2013)

This catchy 2011 song from François & the Atlas Mountains always reminds of spring, and gets me in such a good mood.
Les plus beaux - François the Atlas Mountains
