Observations from a Biology Lab

Last Wednesday, I had my first experience with a university-level science lab. This was one of my key observations.

Common expressions scientists use when working with microscopes:
- “We’ll be better able to observe this specimen under the parfocal lens of the compound light microscope.”
- “Let’s increase the objective magnification to 40x, so we can see the meristematic region more clearly”
- “Ah, I see. Perfect.”

Common expressions I use when working with microscopes:
- “Try twisting that black knob.”
- “Try twisting the other black knob.”
- “Let’s try a different lens.”
- “Is it plugged in?”
- “I give up.”

Despite being an English major, I do love science, but it's times like these where I wonder if I really am suited for a Biology minor. I don't always use technical terms when I'm doing a lab, and as far as I'm concerned, that isn't an issue. However, this somehow seems to insult some of the science students in the class. *sigh*

In unrelated news, I’ve been listening to this song all week long – on the way to class, in the gym, while studying, etc. The weather outside might be frightful, but it's just so darn catchy.
Jonquil – It Never Rains (2010)

I hope everyone is having a good weekend, and I'll try to make my posts more regular from now on. Hopefully, I'll be back again next week! Happy Saturday everyone. J

  2. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Your time with the microscope made my day. :)

Those science students you described may be related to a fellow called Sheldon Cooper. You have my permission to make fun of them when you get the top mark in class.

    1. It really is! I can't stop listening to it.
LOL, Sheldon seems to have quite a large extended family. He (unfortunately) even has a cousin who lives very close-by. However, I can stick it out until the end of the year, and I may just stick my nose up a little higher in the air after I walk out of that final exam :P

ps: skype party next weekend, same time? I'm busy all day & evening on Saturday, but Friday works well.
